Amp’d Mobile shutting downToday

According to different sources all over the world, Amp’D Mobiles is shuttign down its services today. The embattled MVNO alerted subscribers to the shutdown via text message over the weekend, urging consumers wishing to port their Amp’d phone number to a rival carrier to do so by the end of business today. No early termination fee will apply, although prepaid subscribers due an outstanding unpaid credit, rebate or refund will need to file a claim “to be considered for payment.” According to the FAQ, Amp’d “is currently in discussions with several parties” exploring a potential acquisition.

Amp’d customers were alerted to the shutdown via text message over the weekend. Anyone still using the Amp’d network that wishes to port their number to a non-bankrupt cellular carrier is urged strongly to do so today. (Though numbers should theoretically still be portable after the shutdown, it will likely be easier to do so now.)

Amp’d was well known as Mobile Virtual Network Operator, or MVNO, a term which means it doesn’t have its own infrastructure but rather leases network space from other carriers (in this case, Verizon). Other (relatively) popular MVNOs include Virgin Mobile, Helio, and Boost Mobile. To date, no MVNO has made much of a dent in the U.S. cellular market, though many continue to try.

Say Good Bye to iPhone!

According to NY Times, Researchers at a security firm Independent Security Evaluators have announced that they have found a vulnerability in the Apple iPhone that allows them to extract personal information and “take control” of the device from a malicious website or WiFi connection.

In a video, they have presented a demo of of the exploit as well as answers to questions, but does not provide would-be hackers any detailed instructions. Apple has reportedly been notified of findings. A full disclosure of the hack will be released at the BlackHat conference on August 2nd, while a preliminary is currently available.

According to the site, in their proof of concept, the exploit can read the log of SMS messages, address book, call history, voicemail data and transmit it to the malicious site.

Cracking Windows Passwords is even more easier for HACKERS now!

Using @stake LC4 (formerly L0phtCrack), now you can easily crack the Windows passwords. However since Symantec stopped development of L0phtcrack, use Sean’s program called LC5.
Just like L0phtCrack, LC5 attacks your Windows machine with a combination of dictionary and brute force attacks.

LC5 can crack almost all common passwords in seconds. More advanced passwords with numbers and characters takes longer.

The main purpose of the LCP program is user account passwords auditing and recovery in Windows NT/2000/XP.

HOW IT WORKS:

Windows NT, 2000 and XP passwords are stored as encrypted hash marks. LC5 attacks these hash marks with hundreds of passwords per minute. Eventually the correct password will be sent and then displayed to the screen.

Hackers can install this application onto a primary domain controller and steal hundreds of passwords within minutes.

Inside Google: Bad Earning Reports

According to Nathan Weinberg, Google stock has plummeted on what the market is calling a bad earnings report, falling over $46 in after-hours trading. Google fell from a closing price of $548.59 to around $502.47, an 8% drop that wiped out $13 billion in shareholder value.Reuters called the earnings report “disappointing”.

Jeffrey Lindsay, analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, says Google is blowing it on expenses, spending too damn much money. “These guys have been spending like drunken sailors.”

Google CEO Eric Schmidt, displaying an incredible amount of arrogance or insularity (pick one),acted in a statement like Google didn’t slip at all. While yes, the market is over-reacting, it is still reacting to a down quarter, and to not notice that it was a down quarter is just stupid.

Nokia! Leading the Race..

LG versus MOTO? LG won!

As compared to LG, Motorola is in loss due to slow phones sales overseas and tough competition in the United Sates. The handset manufacturer posted an operating loss of $38 million, compared with a profit of $1.35 for the second quarter last year. Net sales fell 19% to $8.7 billion from $10.82 billion the same quarter last year.

During the quarter, Motorola shipped 35.5 million mobile phones, an estimated 13.5% share of the global market, most likely pushing it to third place in the global market behind Nokia and Samsung. Its mobile device unit sales fell 40% to $4.3 billion, posting a loss of $264 million, compared with earnings of $804 million a year ago.

On the other hand, LG announced that it earned 385 billion won ($420 million) during the second quarter. For the same quarter last year, the South Korean electronics maker posted a loss of 9.7 billion won.Total sales rose 1.7% to 5.9 trillion won ($6.4 billion), while handset sales rose 27% to 2.7 trillion won ($2.9 billion) from a year ago. LG said it shipped 19.1 million phones during the quarter.

The company said it expects earnings per share from continuing operations in the third quarter to be flat or slightly up from the second quarter earnings. But it repeated its warning that the mobile device business would not turn a profit this year, saying “it expects its financial results to improve in the second half of the year.”
